Tom Watson – Golf Club World.

Tom Watson was today named US golf captain for Ryder Cup 2014. The 63-year-old succeeds Davis Love III following Europe’s record-breaking comeback victory in October and will become the oldest captain in Ryder Cup history.

“I was waiting for about 20 years to get the call,” he told NBC.  “It is a great honour to do it again.” Eight-time major champion Watson was the last US captain to record an away win, with a 1993 victory at the Belfry in England. Can he do it again?

Golf Club World is proud to introduce one of the greatest golf players in the rich golf history.

Thomas Sturges Watson (born September 4, 1949 in Kansas City, Missouri) is an American professional golfer who has played on the PGA Tour and now plays mostly on the Champions Tour. His father Ray introduced him to the game. His early coach was Stan Thirsk at the Kansas City Country Club. Watson first gained local renown while on his high school team at The Pembroke-Country Day School in Kansas City. Watson won four straight Missouri State Amateur championships, from 1968–1971. He attended Stanford University, playing on the golf and table tennis teams and graduating with a degree in psychology in 1971.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Watson was one of the leading players in the world, winning eight major championships and heading the PGA Tour money list five times. He was the number one player in the world according to McCormack’s World Golf Rankings from 1978 until 1982; in both 1983 and 1984, he was ranked second behind Seve Ballesteros. He also spent 32 weeks in the top 10 of the successor Sony Rankings in their debut in 1986.

Watson is now also notable for defying age: at nearly 60 years of age, and 26 years after his last major championship victory, he led much of the 2009 Open Championship, but eventually lost in a four-hole playoff. With a chance to win the tournament with par on the 72nd hole, he missed an eight-foot putt, before losing the playoff to Stewart Cink.

Watson has been one of the most complete players ever to play golf. He was named PGA Player of the Year 6 times, 1977–1980, 1982 and 1984, and trails only Tiger Woods, who has been named Player of the Year 9 times. He won the Vardon Trophy for lowest scoring average three straight years: 1977, 1978, and 1979. He played on four Ryder Cup teams: 1977, 1981, 1983, and 1989 and captained the victorious 1993 team. He was voted the Bob Jones Award in 1987, the highest honor given by the United States Golf Association in recognition of distinguished sportsmanship in golf.  He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1988. He was also inducted into the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame. He won 1992 GCSAA Old Tom Morris Award.  Tom Watson is author or co-authored several books, including Tom Watson’s Strategic Golf. His latest, The Timeless Swing, was released by Atria books in March 2011. He has written a golf instruction column in Golf Digest magazine since the mid-1970s. He was ranked as the 10th greatest golfer of all time in the 2000 Golf Digest magazine list and he is, after Sam Snead, only the second Golf Professional Emeritus at The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. Between his greats we can also count he is the oldest player to hold the lead after 54 holes at a major championship (2009 Open Championship at Turnberry, Scotland) and also he is the oldest player to lead after any completed round at a major championship (2009 Open Championship at Turnberry, Scotland).

Summer is long gone and we are just starting to get ready for a holiday season. However that doesn’t mean that you can’t get away from all the stress and hustle that comes with Christmas. You don’t even need to part with your golf clubs! There are many amazing golfing places in UK where the greats have played; surely you have at least few of them on your ‘must play’ list. This is a quick overview of best golf resorts that UK has to offer.

 Royal Birkdale Golf Club

This beautiful golf course is located at Birkdale Hills in the North of England. Since it has opened its doors in 1889, it hosted two Ryder cups, the Walker and Curtis Cups, the Woman’s British Open and the Open Championship was hosted nine times in this location. Royal Birkdale Golf Club is certainly rich in history and any golfer to have an opportunity to play there won’t be disappointed. It is world class golfing experience and even in the perfect weather conditions one will have plenty of memorable and challenging shots.

The Belfry

Here is another ‘must play’ golf course for any golfer. This golf resort is located in Wishaw, Warwickshire, UK. The Belfry has three golf courses – Brabazon and The Derby, PGA National. While the Brabazon and PGA National might be a little challenging for a beginner golfer, Derby course definitely has one of the best practicing facilities. It hosted Ryder cup on four occasions.

Old Course at St Andrews

This iconic course needs no introduction – it is the ‘home’ of golf. One of the most famous golfers off all time Bobby Jones was quoted saying “If I had to select one course upon which to play the match of my life, I should have selected the Old Course”. This golf course is also well known for 112 bunkers, the famous double greens, 700 year old bridge; it is amazing how through the 600 years Old Course at St Andrews remained relevant and challenging.

Celtic Manor Twenty Ten

This course was specifically build for a Ryder Cup 2010 and is located in Newport, Wales. The water hazards on half of its holes and six signature holes make the game challenging and exciting. The first 14 holes will let you enjoy valley lowlands of the Welsh countryside and the last 4 holes play up along a mountainside.

K Club

If you ever consider spending your golf holidays in Ireland, you can’t miss the opportunity to play in the venue which hosted The Ryder Cup 2006. This course also hosted the Smurfit European Open on European tour. There are two golf courses to choose from, both full of different hazards. It doesn’t matter if you are off or on your game, one thing for sure it will be a game to remember.

Why not take a little golf holiday and try out these courses for yourselves? Leave a comment below and tell us about your favorite golf course!

The Top 5 Golf Drivers of 2012

Golf Club World`s Top 5 golf drivers chart.

Callaway Razr Fit

Callaway RazrFit

This beautiful and popular driver has attracted great reviews from golfers across the planet or all abilities. This is the first driver that Callaway have made that features adjustable weights and rotating hosel. This means that golfers can change the centre of gravity and the angle of the face heard to suit their own swing and game. Callaway have also shaved 4 grams off the weight of the club face to help slow swingers and improve ball speed for off centre shots. Although these features are not new to golf drivers Callaway have done a fantastic job with this and it justifies its place as top of the list of drivers of 2012.

Nike VR S

Nike VR

The fantastic Nike driver features a variable thickness face has been designed to help with those annoying off centre hits. This club is very forgiving in that sense. The head can be adjusted through 4 degrees with eight angles the club face can be set to, offering a significant amount of variation to suit the individual golfer. The shaft now weighs less than 60 grams so you also see a significant improvement in the pace of your swing.

Cobra Amp

Cobra Amp

The Cobra Amp is the best looking club in my top 5. I am very impressed with the stylish design of this golf driver. Having said this the Cobra is here on merit not appearance. The driver has three setting that can be applied to the angle of the face. The great part of this driver is how the shaft length, swing weight and face curvature change in relation to the loft. This means that helps you with the aspect of your game that needs help. If you are a faster swinger it will improve your control and if you swing slow it will improve pace.

PING G20

Ping G20

The PING G20 is designed for a low centre of gravity. This is achieved using a low density titanium to save weight which has been repositioned within the club. The shaft has a high balance point and is light weight, putting seven grams extra into the club head to ensure more power from the same strength swing.

Cleveland Classic

Cleveland Classic

This club has an attractive vintage design which makes it stands out. In addition to the style this driver boasts some great features to help golfers with slower swings. The Cleveland Classic is one of the most light weight clubs on the scene at the moment is between 30 to 50 grams lighter than most of its competitors. All of this range uses a Miyazaki shaft which weighs less than 55 grams and a rubber grip weighing less than 25 grams. Cleveland have built on their previous light weight designs and seem excel in this arena, light weight drivers.

Over the years the technological improvement of golf clubs in general has been rapid and extensive. Drivers in particular have come on leaps and bounds in the last decade. Most premium drivers are heavily engineered and are great at helping you to get great flight of the T.

A lot of this engineering has come from the design of the head. Tiger Woods was quoted in 2011 saying he looked for a driver that could help him hit further and straighter and that he felt Nike Golf had really achieved this in their 2011 and 2012 range by reducing unwanted spin off the club face. If technology has helped Tiger I am sure the rest of us will have seen massive improvements.

So what has and what will 2013 bring in terms of new drivers?

In an interesting review I watched recently with Gary Seal, a scratch golfer, I noticed he commented on how much improvement he had observed in the shafts of clubs. Like me he feels that a lot of the major advances in club heads had been found and implemented and that significant advances in this area were unlikely, Gary feels like the real improvements made in 2012 have come by introducing premium shafts.

Some of this change has been in the appearance of the shaft and handles but this is mainly aesthetic, I would like to know what improvements have been made that will help my game. I am sure golfers like Ian Poulter will have great fun with a variety of coloured shafts but this won’t help me on cold Tuesday morning at my local club.

The reduction in the weight of the shafts is definitely a big improvement. Light weight shafts on golf clubs is an advantage to all golfers but does offers us older golfers an added advantage because although over the years I have improved my game dramatically in lots of areas I can feel that the speed of my swing has slowed down and although I spend less time in the rough than in my younger days I would like to combine this control with more pace and distance. I have noticed that the great new clubs of 2012 have seen dramatic improvement in this area.

There also seems to be more drivers with longer shaft lengths being promoted and sold. Having tried some longer shafts I have noticed that personally this does have a dramatic improvement on the speed of my swing but I do seem to be losing some of the control, so I won’t be rushing out to get a 46 length. This is however all down to the individual golfer and I am confident that serious golfers will be getting custom fit for their clubs and in particular drivers more often. This is a way that would help most golfers of all standards to see a measurable improvement in their game and with the invention of applications such as PING-Golf this is going to be more and more common place.

In summary I think that one of the biggest changes we will see in golf equipment in 2013 is going to come as a result of “custom” fitting becoming a cheaper and more readily available, this will help people to find clubs that suit them and in turn improve their game.

Golf has its origins in Scotland in the 15th century where golfers would walk around the beach hitting a pebble between sand dunes with a stick. Although this is long way from the beauty and glamor of St. Andrew and the sport has of course moved a long way in terms of technology. Golf continued in this guise until 1750 when it evolved into a sport more familiar to golf we play today.

In 1774 the first set of rules was written by a group of golfers from Edinburgh. During this time there was lots of experimentation with balls, with even things like leather bags filled with feathers being tried, yes you guessed it this ball did not fly far.
